Welcome

We can make a step change in our communities

It’s not acceptable that half the people in our neighbourhoods live in fear of sexist harassment and violence.

Real change is possible

ThisHasToSTOP Toolkit is an evidence-based framework for tackling misogyny and creating culture change in our communities, based on the award-winning ThisHasToSTOP campaign.

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is persistent and UK-wide. In fact, the problem is so pervasive it can sometimes feel like it’s normal, a problem that can’t be solved.

But we know this isn’t the case. But we have seen real change Redbridge. ThisHasToSTOP had a significant impact as early as its first year, achieving a 20% reduction in reported incidents of street harassment.

We want to share what we’ve learned because ThisHasToSTOP is a real-life demonstration that real change is possible.

How the Toolkit came about

Large electronic billboard with message saying "THIS HAS TO STOP" in front of a cityscape with high-rise buildings, cars, and buses on a cloudy day. It also displays a logo and message for Rebridge, indicating no place for abuse.

ThisHasToSTOP Toolkit grows from our shared experiences of working on this award-winning campaign, which has been in operation in the London Borough of Redbridge since 2023.

We know that violence against women and girls (VAWG) is persistent and UK-wide. In fact, the problem is so pervasive it can sometimes feel normal, like a problem that can’t be solved.

ThisHasToSTOP had a significant impact as early as its first year, achieving a 20% reduction in reported incidents of street harassment – a real life demonstration that real change is possible. We are passionate about achieving change for women, so we are sharing our learning to support change-makers in other areas with the tools and insights they need.

Our experience shows that by using the right tools and approach, which build on current evidence of what works in behaviour change, coupled with localised research and community involvement, we can make a real difference.

So the Toolkit takes this learning and makes it available, free of charge, for everyone, in the hope that more communities will benefit from a step change in VAWG.

For us at Social Engine, it’s been an enormous privilege working with incredible colleagues at London Borough of Redbridge, who have both driven and embraced ThisHasToSTOP with endless enthusiasm and outstanding results. We are grateful to Civa and the MSN fund for their funding and support to help create the Toolkit, which will take the learnings from Redbridge and make them widely available to change-makers across the UK.

We hope you’ll join us in this massive – but wholly achievable – challenge: to change behaviours, transform our culture and create a safer world for women and girls.

Violence against women and girls is so pervasive it can sometimes feel normal, like a problem that can’t be solved.
